GPT-6 Intelligent UI Turns ChatGPT Answers Into Interfaces

OpenAI taught ChatGPT to stop handing out essays when a calculator would do. GPT-6 Intelligent UI lets ChatGPT answer with tappable buttons, forms, interactive charts and small purpose-built tools. It reached paid plans on October 7 and Free and Go on October 8, according to TechCrunch and OpenAI's announcement. Below: what each tier gets, the catch, and what to test on Monday.

What GPT-6 Intelligent UI actually does

The model picks the layout of each reply based on the question. TechCrunch's examples included an interactive diagram of how an airplane wing generates lift, a multi-day hiking map and a personal savings calculator. Users can also ask for a tool outright, such as a bill splitter or a small game, per MacRumors.

Plain text is still used when it is the most useful answer. The interface is also not freeform: OpenAI says it comes from a library of native, streamable components, with a compiler assembling the UI while the model generates it (via MacRumors).

Which tier gets which model

| Plan | Model in the Chat tab | Rollout date | | --- | --- | --- | | Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise | GPT-6 Sol | October 7 | | Free, Go | GPT-6 Luna | October 8 |

The rollout covers the Chat tab only; the models behind ChatGPT Work and Codex are unchanged. Enterprise access can depend on workspace admin settings.

Per Search Engine Journal, the rollout is gradual on the web and in updated apps, and older ChatGPT desktop apps for macOS and Windows do not support it.

The catch: Pro reasoning turns Intelligent UI off

Intelligent UI works from Instant through Extra High reasoning. Pro reasoning is excluded: OpenAI's release notes, as quoted by Mixed News, say it "continues to use GPT-6 Astra and doesn't support Intelligent UI."

So the setting meant for your hardest questions answers in plain prose. I found no statement from OpenAI on whether Astra will get the component library later.

What the announcement does not say about the API

None of the launch coverage I read says Intelligent UI is available through the API, and none gives pricing for it. The models do have per-token prices from their September 22 launch: Sol at $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, Luna at $0.10 and $0.50. Those are model prices. They say nothing about the interactive layer.

Don't put a roadmap item on "embed this in our own product" until OpenAI documents it.

Why this matters for product managers

  • Expectations just moved. A user who watched ChatGPT answer with a calculator will open your support chatbot and judge its three paragraphs differently.
  • Two tiers, two models. Free gets Luna and paid plans get Sol, so the same question can produce a different experience depending on the plan. If customers research your product in ChatGPT, you don't control which one they see.
  • Citations are an open question. Search Engine Journal notes the announcement doesn't say how sources appear inside charts, comparisons or tools.

What to test on Monday morning

  1. Compare Free and paid. Run your ten most common customer questions on a Free account (Luna) and a Plus or Business account (Sol). Screenshot both and note where they diverge.
  2. Try Pro reasoning. Rerun your hardest question with Pro reasoning, confirm it falls back to prose, then rerun at Extra High to see the interface return.
  3. Turn the visuals down. TechCrunch reports users can reduce visuals. Search Engine Journal points to a "Layout and visuals" setting on the web and says some elements may still appear. Check what survives.
  4. Check your fleet. Look at your Enterprise admin settings and the version of any ChatGPT desktop apps your staff use.
  5. Audit your own chat flows. Find places where users type numbers into a chat or read comparisons in paragraphs. Those are candidates for forms, calculators or tables you build with components you control, since no API for this has been announced.

For anyone shipping AI to production, the lesson is that the answer format is now part of the product, and your users' reference point for it just changed.
